Baby Allergies & How to Handle Them

Generally, babies are allergic to certain food items but, baby allergies are not limited to food items only, they can be caused due to dust, sun rays, unseen particles, and also by coming in contact with another person.


Baby allergies can be seasonal also. Climatic conditions are very much responsible for causing certain baby seasonal allergies. Also, called ‘Hay fever’ seasonal allergies in babies are airborne and are caused by pollens and moulds.


Handling Babies and Their Allergies

To handle baby allergies keen observation is a must. There are various signs of baby allergies you should keep a check on.

  • Baby Food allergies

There are various food items to which a baby could be allergic to. Some of the most common allergens are milk, fish, nuts, eggs, etc. For keeping a check on baby food allergies, you should know the eating habits of the baby and observe the changes in the baby caused by specific food items.


Baby food allergies can be recognized if:

  • The baby has a stuffy nose

  • Stomach pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Itchy eyes, etc.

Treatment of these allergies is to simply prevent the food items which the baby is allergic to. Also, always keep your kitchen accessories clean, especially the utensils in which the baby food is prepared and served. Kitchen accessories carry a lot of allergens if not cleaned properly.

  • Skin allergies

Skin allergies in babies are due to unhygienic touches or contact with harmful things like sun rays, pollution etc. Since babies are very attractive and any person who sees them would want to touch them. These can lead to baby skin allergies which are -

The treatment of baby skin allergies is to avoid using any kind of body product that is unknown to you. Have a daily skincare routine for the baby, avoid taking the baby out in the sunlight and prevent other people from touching your kids without washing their hands. You can keep a sanitizer handy!

  • Seasonal allergies

Changes in seasons cause baby seasonal allergies. The signs of seasonal allergies in a baby are -

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

  • Itchy eyes and ears

Baby seasonal allergies should not be left untreated as it can lead to serious health issues like ‘asthma’.

Baby seasonal allergies require extra medical attention apart from avoiding the allergens.

  • Pet allergies

If you have a pet then you should be extra careful of your baby’s health. Generally, most of the people have furry animals as their pet. These animals tend to shed their furs which can get into the baby’s eyes, nose, and mouth causing:

  • Runny nose

  • Sneezing

  • Itchy and watery eyes

Pet allergies can be prevented by:

  • Avoiding pets indoors

  • Cleaning the house regularly with a vacuum cleaner

  • Avoiding hugging and kissing the pet

  • Avoiding touching the baby without washing hands.
